Il kamishibai ha origini lontane. Bisogna risalire al periodo tra le due Guerre e arrivare fino in Giappone, dove un cantastorie, con la sua bici-teatro, radunava attorno a sé folle di bambini curiosi.
Lo spettacolo, il cui nome si pur tradurre con “teatro di carta” (in lingua originale 纸 芝 居), si reggeva tutto sulla voce dell’artista e sulla suggestione di alcune cartoline, che venivano cambiate a mano, facendole scorrere nel butai, una cornice in legno.
L’arte del kamishibai è un’arte di strada, affine, per certi aspetti, a quella di commentare i film muti. Ancora oggi è utilizzata in molte scuole giapponesi in precisi percorsi didattici, come alternativa al libro. Ha infatti forti capacità comunicative ed educative.
In Italia una roccaforte del kamishibai è l’associazione AKI, con sede a Bologna. Organizza corsi di formazione, eventi e mostre. E ha sviluppato anche un catalogo di storie per kamishibai, in collaborazione con la casa editrice Artebambini. Online è invece attiva la Alfieri TV che ospita, sul suo canale Youtube, una selezione di storie davvero interessanti.
